How will I let the audience know that a fight will happen because the character is Irish? I’ll name the character Eamon. But wait – some people might not know that Eamon is an Irish name. I’ll mention Guinness… but you don’t necessarily have to be Irish to drink Guinness. Screw it, I’ll make his nickname “Irish”
I like to identify what I call “crutches”, a fallback that cartoonists use when they don’t have an idea for a joke. I’m not putting anyone down for using them; every cartoonist does it. Some make bad puns and then call attention to the bad pun. Some have half a dozen or more (looking at you, little pink sock guy). But a cliffhanger when these two can’t believe what they’re about to see or who they’ve just run into…
Is there a joke here? Jeff can’t spell a word, Mutt offers a suggestion- but it’s for the wrong word. Normally, one or both of the words would have factored into the joke – like if Jeff was behaving like a hypocrite. I feel that if the word was “dismissive”, there’d be kind of a joke.
… my darling. Just shut your pretty eyes
