A local family restaurant here, that I worked 30 years for, is the biggest buyer of lake perch in Michigan. They serve perch sandwiches and dinners all year round. Russ’ Restaurants, Holland, MI.
“Mom, today I had a horrible day. I just want to be left alone, but people keep bugging me. I’m an introvert, you see. I wanna do my work, get my grades, and be left alone. There’s nothing wrong with being anti-social.”
I worked in a restaurant for 30 years…when I first started, I worked nights, then I got to become a breakfast cook…the 1st person there. I’d get there at 5:30am, and be by myself for an hour before the next employee would show up. I would often hear things that would make me think someone would come in to rob the place, and sometimes the walk-in cooler door would open all by itself…but was told that it was just the ghost of the customer that died there a few years before I came to work there.
I help my wife…I stay out of her way! I don’t make comments like, “We could’ve just bought cookies”, or “Shop online, it’s quicker”. I just stay quiet, read my comics….
I once lived in Benton, Arkansas, in a neighborhood built on a hill. We would go up to the top of the hill (3 houses up, back yard of the house there). We used a piece of panel, slick side down, sled down the hill, across the street, and into the bushes across from our house. Fun times! And it was our neighbor’s 16yr old daughter who got us into it! My brothers and I were younger.
I’ve had bad experiences with dentists…the 1st time as a little kid. Another time, in my 20’s, I went in to get a tooth pulled, asked to be put under which he did, put during the procedure, he hit a nerve that woke me up out of it, and I almost bolted for the door. He calmed me down, put me back under, and finished. My bottom lip was numb for a long time after that, and I would often find myself drooling because I couldn’t tell. To this day, I still have a numb spot on my lip, about the size of a pea.
I too was given gas for my 1st…but it came after I got scared and put up a fight…it took 3 people to hold me down, then they put the gas mask on, and then I heard, “It’s going to be fine, just relax”…then blackness. I woke up in a wheelchair with a mouthful of gauze and cotton! Mom was crying. And you know, it only takes one bad experience to make it harder to go see another dentist.
I watch Die Hard every year come Christmas time…
